How to keep your flowers looking fresh & fab

Flowers are gorgeous no matter what type - their staying power is however dependent on the amount of care they will receive from you to keep them alive for longer.

There’s nothing like fresh, abundant blooms that are sure to grab your attention in a foyer, your home, or even at your desk. It is possible to have long-lasting blooms as long as you know how to give them the right TLC.

Here are some of our tips to keep your flowers looking perky:

  • Clean your vase thoroughly: Start with a clean vase to avoid any bacteria harbouring in the vessel - this will ensure your flowers will have a longer shelf life. Sounds pretty simple; but a lot of people forget to do this and waste an expensive bunch of flowers in just a couple of days.

  • Prep your flowers: Cut the stems by 3cm at a 45-degree angle so the stems can drink more water. Remove any foliage that will sit below the waterline to prevent leaves from rotting.

  • Change the water regularly: Using room-temperature water, changing the water every two days will help keep your flowers fresh longer.

  • Keep away from fruits & veggies: Keep your flowers away from ripening fruit or vegetables as ripening fruit gives off an odourless invisible gas called ethylene. When you sit your flowers next to ripening fruit, you’re exposing them to this gas and they will decide they’d better drop their petals the way Mother Nature intended.

  • Find a good spot: Keep your flowers away from bright light and heat and that includes sunny windowsill to avoid the petals from drooping. Your vase of flowers will live longer in a cool dark spot.
