Barbie, Birkins & Blooms

It Keeping in theme with the global movie premiere of Barbie the movie this week, we thought it would be fun to show some Barbie love and uncover why this doll has been on children’s wish lists for over 60 years.

All the Barbie-related content got to me…

How could it not?

The delicious bubble gum pink colour all over our social media feed is hard to ignore and Barbie’s sartorial style is picture-perfect (sigh). Of course, it made me want to join the fun and pay homage to this young (!) and famous 64-year-old doll.

Growing up I had 3 Barbie dolls and you probably had one too or knew at least one friend who owned one growing up - after all, a Barbie doll is sold every three seconds!

Are you ready to uncover some Barbie facts?

  •  Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, an entrepreneur noticed her daughter, Barbara, playing with paper dolls and dreaming about what kind of woman she would become decided there should be a proper doll onto which girls could project their highest aspirations but in a 3D form. •  Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

  •  Barbie turned 64 years old in 2023.

  •  With more than 200 careers on her resume, Barbie continues to take on aspirational and culturally relevant roles. Barbie’s career line reinforces the brand’s purpose to inspire the limitless potential in every girl.

  • She first broke the “plastic ceiling” in the 1960s when, as an astronaut, she went to the moon…four years before Neil Armstrong.
